Group Digipak

Group Digipak
Myself and my group individually created digipak designs for our artist on Photoshop. We had to produce 6 different slides; front cover, CD, back cover, welcome note and two images. We then viewed each others designs and discussed as a group who's design we all preferred. As a group we decided that we should create a digipak through a combination of our ideas so that we would all have an equal input into our final digipak design. We therefore provided each other with strengths and weaknesses of our digipak designs which assisted us with making a decision of who's slides to use on our digipak. In addition to this, discussing our digipak designs meant that we were able to increase how conventional our final product was and how well it linked in to our music video and magazine advert.

My Digipak

One aspect of my own digipak design that I like is that, on 3 of the slides I have included an image of my artist providing the audience with eye contact. This allows the audience to engage with my artist and therefore begin to build a relationship with her. On the other 2 slides I have incorporated an image of my artist where she is looking away from the audience which allows her feelings to be hidden behind her music which would entice the audience to listen to her music to discover more about her. In addition to this I like the recurring theme of the brick wall background that I have included on 4 of my digipak slides. This is because it is highly conventional to the indie genre and provides a visual link between all of my products.

There are a number of improvements I could make to my digipak to enhance its appeal and success for my target audience. In addition to this I would add an effect to the images of my artist that I have included in my digipak. This is so that I can improve the quality of them and make them coherent to each other. I would alter the design of the cd as the daisy chain does not look realistic and therefore makes it lack visual appeal. I would attempt to incorporate a more realistic image of a daisy chain or alter the design of the cd completely. This would therefore improve  how visually appealing my CD would be which would in turn enhance the success of my digipak as a whole.

Daisy's Digipak

A main aspect of Daisy's digipak that I particularly like is that each slide is coherent with the rest, which therefore allows the digipak to be highly visually appealing for our target audience of females aged 16-25. The front cover of Daisy's digipak is extremely appealing for our target audience as the image she has included provides the audience with eye contact, which allows them to build a relationship with the artist before even hearing her music. The artist is also seen displaying a highly conventional image to the indie genre with elements such as; a floral dress, denim jacket, red lipstick and messy hair. This further provides the audience with an insight into the artist and also reinforces the fact the music is of the indie genre. In addition to the front cover I particularly like the layout of Daisy's back cover design as it provides the audience with an image of the artist which does not deter the audience’s attention of the song titles of the album. The layout of the song titles also resemble that of a staircase which may be relevant to the journey the artist is taking through her music. The back cover design further increases how conventional the digipak is as the artist is seen wearing the same indie conventional clothing and is holding an acoustic guitar, a piece of highly conventional indie genre iconography. In addition to this the artist is positioned in front of a brick wall which is a highly conventional location of the indie genre as it provides an edgy appearance to the artist. In addition to these two slides I particularly like the daisy image design idea on Daisy’s CD slide. This is because it links directly to the artists name and is also highly conventional as it represents nature a prime indie element.

Although I particularly like the daisy image on Daisy’s CD slide I believe that it could be improved if she was to include a background image. This is so that the CD would be more visually appealing to our target audience and also so that it would be more conventional to the indie genre. I like the concept that Daisy had with including a shoestring on the CD as it links with our music video song title ‘Noserings and Shoestrings’. However I believe that if she included a more realistic image to represent the shoestring it would further enhance the CD’s visual appeal and overall how successful the digipak is as a whole, relating to the indie genre. In addition to this I believe that the floral stamp on the welcome note slide is not conventional to the indie genre and also not coherent with the rest of the digipak. The colour pink is more associated with the pop music genre and therefore means the welcome note slide lacks an indie conventional appearance.
Ella's Digipak

A main aspect of Ella’s digipak that I like is the design of the CD. This is because I believe it is extremely visually appealing for our target audience due to the design of the CD. The daisy design is well edited and therefore the daisys are clearly presented to the audience The use of the daisy design provides a coherent link between our products due to the fact our artists name is Daisy. In addition to this I particularly like two of the images Ella decided to incorporate of our artist. The first is the image on the front cover as the artist is providing the audience with eye contact. This therefore entices the audience to engage with the artist and therefore begin to build a relationship with her before even listening to her music. In turn the use of this particular image on the front cover will more likely attract audiences attention to purchase the digipak and listen to the artists music. The second image I particularly like is on the image slide which presents the artist playing the guitar and looking down at it. This image provides the audience with mystery regarding the artists personality and music. In addition to this it is also conventional to the indie genre as our artist is seen playing an acoustic guitar and wearing indie style clothing. By including this image alongside the image providing eye contact it is likely to entice the audience to listen to the artists music as their curiosity is sparked.

Although there are a number of elements I like about Ella’s digipak there are also a few aspects that she could alter to improve the visual appeal and how conventional her overall digipak is. Within Ella’s digipak design she needs to include a welcome note slide so that it follows the exact criteria of a digipak. This would therefore improve how successful the digipak is as it would allow the audience to feel engaged with the audience as they are given the opportunity to read a personal message from herself. In addition to this I think that Ella should use the same image effect on each slide of her digipak. This is so that the whole digipak would be visually coherent and therefore more visually appealing for the audience. This would in turn increase the professional appearance of her digipak and overall the likely success of it enticing consumers to purchase it.

Millie's Digipak

The main aspect of Millie’s digipak design that stands out to me the most and that I like, is the fact that the iconography of the acoustic guitar is evident on all slides of the digipak. This therefore provides a direct link between all slides and also to our music video and magazine advert. In addition to this the acoustic guitar is a highly conventional element of the indie genre and therefore increases how visually conventional the digipak is. In addition to this I believe that Millie’s choice of what image to incorporate of our artist into her song title digipak slide will highly engage the audience. This is because our artist is providing eye contact to the audience, which engages them with the artist and allows them to build a relationship with her before even listening to her music. In addition to this the artist is playing the acoustic guitar in this image which increases the conventionality of this particular slide and also adds a performance element to the slide which relates to the fact the slide provides the audience with the song titles.

In addition to the elements of Millie’s digipak that I like there are a few changes that I believe she could make to improve how conventional and visually appealing her digipak is as a whole. To improve the visuals of Millie’s back cover design I think that she needs to improve on the layout. This is because the song titles are not clear to the audience due to the fact they are randomly arranged providing a somewhat messy appearance. Therefore if Millie was to alter the font and size of the text and rearrange the song titles into a more organised fashion then the overall visual appearance of her back cover design would be greatly improved. Furthermore I think that Millie should change the blur effect around the daisy image and text on her front cover. This is because it makes the front cover lack visual appeal as it does not give the slide a professional appearance. Therefore if Millie was to cut out the images and text and refrain from using the blur tool it would improve the visual appeal of the front cover for the audience which is key in enticing them to purchase the digipak as it is the first slide they see. In addition to these points for Millie to fully improve her digipak she needs to include another picture slide as there are only 5 slides that form her digipak. Therefore if she was to complete all of the 6 slides of her digipak it would increase the success of it overall.

Reflection

After discussing our individual digipak creations we decided to combine slides from each other’s designs so that we all had an equal input and because we all couldn’t decide on who’s full digipak design would fully benefit our music video. We took the front cover from my digipak creation as we believed it was the most appealing for an audience’s first glance of the digipak. However as a group we edited the image I included on the front cover so that the colours were softer and therefore had a more indie appearance. We also took my design of the CD which incorporated the brick background from my magazine advert on it, so therefore we believed it would provide a link between both ancillary products. In addition to this the brick wall is highly conventional of the indie music genre. We altered my original design slightly by replacing the daisy chains on either side with a daisy in the middle, as we thought it would be more visually appealing to our target audience. In addition to this we included a graffiti design over the brick wall to create a visual link between our digipak and the skate park location in our music video. We took the idea of having a daisy in the middle from Daisy's CD design and therefore we merged both of our designs together to create a final group CD slide. For the back cover slide we decided to include Daisy’s design as we thought the layout of the image and text worked well together and was in turn visually appealing. We also took the welcome note from Daisy’s individual digipak design. This is because we thought it was conventional to the indie genre as the combination of the image and text is simplistic. The image included on the slide is the same as the magazine advert which in turn provides a link. We altered this slide by removing the flower brush design as we believed it did not match the recurring theme of our products. The first image we have included on our digipak was chosen by Ella as she believed it provided the audience with a greater insight into the artists’ persona. This therefore would give them an opportunity to build a relationship with her. We incorporated the artists autograph over the image to add a personal touch to the digipak as well as the welcome note. The second image we incorporated was chosen by Millie as she believed it provide the audience with an overall visual of our artist presenting her personality as she is dressed in indie conventional clothing and playing an acoustic guitar. We incorporated a further graffiti image onto the brick wall on this image to further provide a link between the digipak and our music video. All the slides of our digipak were edited to follow the same effect as the front cover first illustrates. This is because it provides the digipak with an indie appearance and therefore improves its visual appeal.
