Group magazine
Before the creation of our group magazine advert we collectively shared ideas by looking at each others individual designs. This allowed us to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each others designs so that we could combine ideas to create a final group magazine advert. By doing so, it meant that we was able to produce a final magazine advert that was conventional to the indie music genre and that linked with our music video and digipak successfully. We created our group magazine advert using Photoshop software which allowed us to experiment with a number of tools to produce a final magazine advert that we were all pleased with.
My Magazine Advert
I believe that the magazine advert that I created individually is highly conventional to the indie music genre. This is because of a number of elements I have combined together when creating my magazine advert. I think that the image I employed on my magazine advert is extremely conventional as the artist is seen wearing a denim jacket which is often seen within indie styles. The indie conventions are also reinforced by the fact she is holding an acoustic guitar which also informs the audience of her music talents. In addition to this the brick wall background further enforces the indie genre of the artists music and also adds an edgy appearance to the magazine advert. I believe that the text I have included works well with the rest of my magazine advert as it is simplistic (a further indie convention) and is also eye catching for the audience, which may entice them to experiment with the artists music.
In addition to the positive elements of my magazine advert, there are also a number of areas of my advert that could be improved upon. I believe that the amount of text I have on my magazine advert could be reduced so that the advert is more visually appealing to the audience as it would not be covered in text. In addition to this it would leave an element of mystery as the audience will be able to find out more about the artist through listening to her music, which would be conventional of the indie music genre. In addition to this I believe that I could improve by changing the brick background as there is not a direct link between this component and our group music video.
Daisy's Magazine Advert
A main element that I believe makes Daisy's' magazine advert successful and also conventional is the image she has included. The image portrays the artist displaying an indie style appearance by wearing a red beanie hat and having messy hair. This therefore informs the audience of the genre of music of our artist at their first glance. In addition to this the fact that the artist is playing the acoustic guitar reinforces the genre a highlights to the audience the artists talent with playing the acoustic guitar. Another element that I especially like about Daisy's magazine advert is the font for 'noserings and shoestrings'. This is because the word shoestrings looks as though it has been written using shoestrings and is therefore visually appealing.
In addition to the positive aspects of Daisy's magazine advert there are a few elements that could be improved. I believe that Daisy could have included an image or a design as the background of her magazine advert. This is because the background is too simple and plain. Although simplistic elements are conventional to the indie genre I think that including a more appealing background was increase how conventional the magazine advert is and also how conventional it is to our target audience. In addition to this I believe that Daisy should have used a less variety of font types for the text on her magazine advert. This is because it deters from the simplistic conventions of the indie music genre.
Ella's Magazine Advert
I believe that Ella's magazine advert is appealing to our target audience through the layout of it. The positioning of the artists name and song title allows the audiences attention to be attracted to this information which may entice them to listen to the artists single. I believe the image Ella has included on her magazine advert is visually appealing and also conventional to the indie genre. This is because she is providing the audience with eye contact which allows the audience to begin to build a relationship with her. Also as the artist is wearing a red beanie and denim shirt it makes the magazine advert more conventional to the indie music genre and in turn informs the audience of the genre at their first glance.
An element of Ella's magazine advert that needs improvement on is the plain background, the same as the comment I made on Daisy's advert above. I believe the background is too simplistic and therefore reduces how visually appealing the magazine advert is which may deter our target audience from being interested in listening to her music. In addition to this I believe the size of the Out Now font should be increased. This is because it is not extremely noticeable in comparison to the other text and therefore would not initially provide the audience with the information that the single is already available for purchase.
Millie's Magazine Advert
I believe that the image that Millie has included on her magazine advert design is the most appealing and conventional element on the advert. This is because the artist is providing the audience with eye contact which allows them to begin to build a relationship with her before even listening to her music. The image also illustrates the artist displaying a highly conventional image. The artist is seen wearing a red beanie hat, a denim shirt and has messy hair. These elements allow the genre of the music to be highlighted to the audience within their first glance. In addition to this the fact the artist is playing the acoustic guitar in this image illustrates to the audience that she is a talented musician and further increases how conventional the image is to the indie music genre. In addition to the image I think the font of the text is visually appealing and almost evokes the idea that its the artists signature. This therefore makes the magazine advert more personal which further allows the audience to begin building a relationship with her.
An aspect of Millie's magazine advert that could be improved upon is the layout. I believe that the layout is somewhat jumbled and if this was altered then the magazine advert would be more visually appealing. This could be improved upon if the daisy's and shoestring were placed more neatly. In addition to this I think the size of the font of the song title; Noserings & Shoestrings, should be increased. This is so that it provides the audience with the song title information at their first glance which may increase the likelihood of the audience wanting to listen to the artists song.
As a group we collectively viewed and analysed each other’s individual magazine advert and discussed which ones we thought were most conventional and would most likely benefit our music video the most. We decided to combine all of our ideas together from our individual magazine adverts to produce a new final magazine advert. We took the idea of a brick wall background from my magazine advert, the daisy images from Millies design, the variations of font from Ellas magazine advert and the idea of using an artist image with her holding a guitar from Daisys' magazine advert. We made this decision as we believed that we all had produced high quality, conventional magazine adverts so combining our ideas would be the best idea to incorporate all of our ideas together. These components also directly link to the music video which therefore influenced the group decision of what to combine to create our final magazine advert.
