Digipak Analysis

Digipak Analysis

A digipak is a style of CD packaging. Digipaks usually consist of a book style paperboard, with one or more plastic trays to hold a CD attached inside. A digipak promotes an artist and their music to the audience as it provides them with vital information such as images and song names. The images incorporated on a digipak may provide the audience with an insight into a hidden message behind the artists music. A digipak also makes the appearance of a CD more eye catching to shoppers and is more likely to entice them into purchasing the product. This would therefore result in attracting a wider audience to purchase the CD rather then the artists already formed fan base. A digipak also allows the artist and record label to store additional promotional materials in the sleeve such as a poster or a booklet.

Digipaks and CD albums vary in a number of ways. Digipaks contain more panels than a CD album and therefore provide the audience with additional information and images surrounding the artist and their music. A CD album generally contains the CD, an inside cover which may contain an information booklet and the front and back covers. In turn the CD album is ideal with protection of the CD disc but a digipak provides the audience with additional information which may engage the audience more with the artist and their music. They are both produced from different materials and therefore their quality and life-span can somewhat vary. Digipaks are usually made from cardboard and are therefore prone to more damage than a CD album which is generally made of plastic.

For our artist we will be creating a 6 part digipak to include relevant images and information linking to our artist and their music. I will be analysing a digipak of Jack Johnson as it is of the indie genre, however the digipak only has 4 parts to it as finding a 6 part indie genre digipak proved a struggle.

Jack Johnsons digipak does not contain a high number of images of him as an artist. This gives the audience the opportunity to interpret their own representation of him based on the images they are provided with and is typical of indie genre artists. On the front cover the audience are presented with the image of Jack Johnson as a silhouette. The image is relatively small in proportion with the image of the tree on the rest of the cover. This leaves the audiences attention not primarily focused on the artist himself. The silhouette image may be significant of the idea that his music can provide a representation of him as an artist without the audience seeing his full identity. In this same image Jack Johnson is seen picking something off the tree which may present his connection with nature through the music he writes and sings. It may also be representative of the journey he is taking as an artist. On the inside cover of the digipak there is an image of Jack Johnson holding his guitar which provides the audience with the representation of his musical talent and that he plays the guitar. On the same image Jack Johnsons face is slightly covered by his hand which in turn hides his mouth. The image may be representative of his music being the most powerful aspect of him illustrating himself as an artist to the public, and therefore the visuals of him are not a vital component in highlighting this to the audience. This further gives the audience the opportunity to interpret and discover Jack Johnsons image through his music.

The main image is of Jack Johnson picking something off of the tree, this illustrates a sense of nature. Therefore the image may be significant of Jack Johnsons' connection with nature through his music which may also highlight his purity within his music. In addition to this it make be significant of the journey he is taking, maybe through his music. The main colours employed on the digipak are yellow, black and white. The colour yellow attracts the audiences attention and connotes the idea of joy and happiness. It provides the audience with an insight into Jack Johnsons' music and the idea that it may be uplifting for the audience to listen to. The colour black is significant of power which may highlight Jack Johnsons' status within the music industry. It also adds an element of elegance to the digipak and therefore results in it being visually appealing for the audience. The colour white provides a connotation of innocence and purity which may relate to Jack Johnsons' music. It may highlight the idea that his music is true and representative of him as a solo artist as he strips back any extravagance to allow the audience to focus on his music. It is also seen as the colour of perfection which may relate to the purity of Jack Johnsons' music.

The colours incorporated on the Jack Johnson digipak somewhat break the typical indie genre conventions. However the colour yellow included grabs the audiences attention and in turn is visually appealing. It may in turn entice the audience to purchase the digipak. The colour black contrasts well with bright colours, so the combination with the colour yellow further enhances the visual appeal for the audience. It allows the text and images of the digipak to be clear and bold for the audience to visualise and enjoy. The colour white generally has a positive connotation. This may evoke a positive response from the audience towards Jack Johnsons music, enticing them to purchase the digipak.

The front cover of the digipak is mainly covered with the image of a tree and Jack Johnson picking something from the tree, highlighting his connection with nature which is evident throughout the digipak. There is also an oval containing information regarding the music on the cd in the top left corner attracting the audiences attention to the music on the cd. The text of Jack Johnsons name is relatively small on the front cover compared to the images included. This may be significant of the fact that he uses his music and the images of the digipak to speak for themselves so the focus is not primarily on his well known name. The inside cover contains a picture of him holding an acoustic guitar which takes up 50% of the cover. This presents to the audience that he has a talent playing the guitar and is conventional to the indie genre. The other half of the inside cover contains a black silhouette image of a plant which relates to the theme of nature throughout. The album title is also included to further inform the audience of its name which may spark their thoughts as to what his music may be about. The cd compartment contains the cd which is yellow with an image of a plant in black on it. This further relates to the theme of nature and follows the colour scheme of the digipak making it more visually appealing. The back cover is yellow and contains the song titles in a column layout to the left of the cover. The column layout allows the audience to concentrate on each song title one by one. The song titles text is relatively small further allowing the songs to speak for themselves. There is also an image of a tree trunk which relates back to the theme of nature evident.

The main images employed on Jack Johnsons digipak allow the audience to learn and understand the theme of nature running throughout. The front cover contains an image of a tree which symbolises the idea of nature and the freedom that Jack Johnson has, maybe in relation to his music. It may also be significant of the journey he is taking with his music within the music industry. In addition to this the digipak contains images of a tree trunk and a recurring image of a plant leaf. This further highlights the theme of nature through the digipak. On the inside cover of the digipak is an image of Jack Johnson holding an acoustic guitar. This introduces the audience to the artist of the digipak and informs them of his musical talent with the acoustic guitar. The image further illustrates the indie genre of his music through the acoustic guitar.

The typography is standard, rounded style lettering. It is simple which is conventional to the indie genre and therefore does not distract the audiences attention from the images and song titles on the digipak. Using simple typography for the song titles on the digipak highlights to the audience that Jack Johnson leaves his music to express his feelings to the audience, and allows them to understand him and his music by listening to them. The colours of the typography are yellow, black and white which follows the digipaks colour scheme. This therefore makes the digipak visually appealing for the audience and allows each part of the digipak to link to the others.

The main text evident on the digipak is that of the artists name (Jack Johnson) and his song titles. This therefore provides the audience with the initial information of who the artist is and his music. The language is very simple to make this clear and precise to the audience so that they are aware of the information in their first glance of the digipak. The digipak also contains information regarding the special bonus tracks included on the album. The language used is simple english so that potential fans are able to understand what the text is telling them quickly and with ease. The incorporation of simple, informative language means that potential fans will spend minimal time reading information regarding the digipak, and in turn the audience are less likely to feel disengaged. This may assist in persuading them to purchase the digipak.

The digipak promotes the genre through the components that are combined together. The overall design of the digipak is simplistic which is conventional of the indie genre. There is also a theme of nature evident throughout the digipak with further portrays the indie genre. An image of Jack Johnson holding an acoustic guitar is incorporated into the digipak. The acoustic guitar is typical of an indie artist and therefore informs the audience of the genre of Jack Johnsons music. However the digipak somewhat subverts the typical indie convetions through the employment of the bright yellow within the colour. The use of this leaves the audience with the opportunity to use their imagination when it comes to their interpretations of Jack Johnsons music as they create a link between this and the indie conventions.

The digipak easily attracts an audience through the images and colour scheme incorporated. The use of the bright yellow combined with the black and white allows the images and text to be visually bold and stand out to the audience, making the digipak visually appealing. The simple language used and the small sized text for the song titles leaves the music to express itself, which may entice them to purchase the album and try out Jack Johnsons music.

The research I have conducted into the Jack Johnson digipak has provided me with a wider knowledge into indie genre digipaks. From the research I have learnt about important components to combine together to create a successfully conventional digipak. This research will assist me with planning and creating my own digipak for my artist as I have been able to depict ideas from what I have analysed. In addition to this my wider knowledge surrounding digipaks means I am more likely to create a digipak that is conventional to the indie genre and also is visually appealing to the audience. As Jack Johnsons digipak subverts the conventions of the indie genre through a number of elements I am now more aware of how to create a successful digipak that is conventional, and also that breaks conventions, but is still appealing to the audience.

Magazine Advert Reflection

Magazine Advert Reflection

Conducting research into indie magazine adverts gave me an insight into the elements incorporated to create a conventionally appealing magazine advert. It allowed me to understand the importance of combining specific components together to create a visually appealing magazine advert that is also conventional to its genre. I was able to depict ideas from the Nina Nesbitt and Florence and the Machine adverts of the indie genre I analysed which assisted me when creating my own magazine advert design. Ideas I took from analysing these magazine adverts included; a brick wall background and the cursive style typography. However a number of elements I decided to include in my magazine advert design somewhat subverted the conventions of the indie genre, and therefore will hopefully appeal to a wider audience.

The ideas and inspirations behind my paper design of the magazine advert have come from the research I have conducted. I chose to incorporate a brick wall background behind the image of the artist as it is conventional to the indie genre as seen on Nina Nesbitts magazine advert. However the background also evokes the idea of the artist being somewhat urban which subverts the conventional representations of an indie artist who is usually linked to rural locations. In front of the brick wall I decided to include a close up of the artist. This is to allow the audience to become familiar with her and they can begin to build a relationship with her as an artist. Also within the image the artist is seen wearing a nosering which provides the audience with a visual link to the noserings and shoestrings song that our music video is produced to. The daisy logo I designed for my magazine advert somewhat subverts the conventions of the indie genre. This is because the logo is visually girly and quirky. I incorporated images of daisys within the logo to link in with the artists name, which may be visually appealing for the audience. On the magazine advert I designed I included vague information that I believed would be be appropriate to entice the audience to purchase the artists album. I boldly incorporated the release date of the album so that it would begin to build a hype around the album and would get the public thinking and talking about the album. This could lead to more people buying the album. Also I included a number of songs that will be on the album, this would entice the public who are already fans of these songs to purchase the album. In addition to this the song titles provide the audience with an idea of what the songs may be about which may assist in enticing them to buy the album. The main colours I incorporated onto the magazine advert was yellow and pink. These colours subvert the conventions of the indie genre as they are girly and would therefore appeal to a wider range of audiences who may not necessarily be fans of indie music.

By forming ideas and inspirations surrounding the magazine advert of our artist it will assist me with creating it on photoshop as I have a clear idea of what I want the outcome to be. When creating my magazine advert I will be able to use my paper copy as guidance so that when using photoshop I will be able to produce an accurate copy of what I designed. By having a paper copy of my design it will inform me of what tools I will need to use in photoshop to create the outcome I anticipate. This would therefore mean I would not have to spend unnecessary time on photoshop deciding upon what tools to use and what to create with them. In addition to this by having a paper copy of my design it is likely to improve the quality of the magazine advert I produce as I am fully aware of what I anticipate it to visually be like.

I created my first magazine advert on photoshop, which was the first time I had used the photo editing programme. It proved a success as I took my time to come to terms with every different tool and what they did. My first magazine advert I have created is somewhat conventional to the indie genre due to the components I have combined together. My magazine advert contains a brick wall background which is highly conventional to the indie genre as it provides an edgy and rural appearance. The brick wall background is also simplistic which is further conventional to the indie genre as artists of this genre include simple components into their music work. Most of my text is black and therefore stands out to the audience and is conventional to the indie genre as it is a versatile colour. This therefore allows the magazine advert to appeal to males and females. The image of my artist is central and she is seen wearing a denim t-shirt and a nosering. This image is therefore highly conventional to the indie genre as it includes elements that are extremely popular with fans of indie music and indie artists. This therefore allows the magazine advert to highly appeal to indie genre music fans.

I believe that my target audience will easily be able to build a relationship with my artist through the magazine advert I have produced. This is due to the image of my artist being centrally positioned which allows it to be the main focus of the magazine advert. In addition to this my artist is facing forward and giving the audience eye contact with therefore allows the target audience to build a relationship with the artist as the eye contact provides them with an insight into her personality.

I decided to incorporate a brick wall background into my magazine advert as this is highly conventional to the indie genre. This therefore allows the audience to understand the genre of the artist from their first glance at the magazine advert. It is also extremely eye catching and adds an edgy and rural element to the magazine advert, further presenting the indie genre. I decided to include an image of my artist centrally located on the magazine advert and with her providing eye contact with the audience to allow them to build a relationship with the artist and learn more about her as a performer. The eye contact of my artist further catches the audiences attention as the second they see the magazine advert they will feel connected with the artist. I decided to make the text of my artists name in a pattern that incorporated a flower design. This is so that the text would directly relate to my artists name and would therefore be eye catching and appeal to the target audience. The rest of the text I have incorporated into my magazine advert is in the colour black. This is so that is stands out for the audience and would inform them of the information of the magazine advert in the first glance. The choices I made regarding my magazine advert are conventional to the indie genre. This is because the magazine advert is appealing yet simplistic which is highly conventional of the indie genre.

From my first magazine advert I would change the layout of the advert so that it would be more visually appealing to the target audience. I would keep the brick wall background as it is highly conventional to the indie genre and would therefore allow the magazine advert to appeal to the target audience. In addition to this I would change the style of the font I have incorporated so that it would appeal and be more eye catching for the target audience which may enhance the likelihood of the magazine advert appealing to the target audience.

After my first magazine advert I created another one that was an improved version of the first. The first magazine advert I created assisted me with doing this as used is as a base to improve upon. I kept the brick background but stretched it to cover the whole area of my magazine advert. I decided to incorporate a different image of my artist as I believed it would appeal to my target audience more. The image has my artist holding an acoustic guitar which further portrays the indie genre, and she is still providing the audience with eye contact which allows them to build a relationship with her. I altered the font of the text on my magazine advert as I believed it would be more eye catching for the audience and in turn make the magazine advert more visually appealing. I also decided to include more text onto the magazine advert to provide the audience with more information which may entice them to look into the magazine advert more and therefore purchase my artists album.

Record Labels

Record Labels
Major Record Labels
Major record labels are large companies within the music industry that may in addition own smaller record labels. The music industry is known to be dominated by three major record labels which include; Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group.

The Universal Music Group is known for managing big name artists such as Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and The Killers. This major record label also owns a number of smaller companies who manage an array of artists. Some of the smaller companies the Universal Music group own are; Def Jam and Island Records. Def Jam manages a number of artists such as, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Rihanna. Island Records manages artists including Jessie J, Drake and Nicki Minaj. The Universal Music Group co-developed Vevo, the website designed for music videos. It allows for free, ad-supported streaming of music videos and other music content to the public.

Sony Music Entertainment is also known for owning popular artists within the music industry which include Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, just to name a few. The major record label owns a number of smaller companies including; Arista and J Records. Arista manages artists such as, Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne and Whitney Houston and J Records manages artists including; Gavin DeGraw, Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera. The company Sony has a number of links within media in addition to the major record label. The media areas include television, mobile phones and computers.

Michael Buble, Cee Lo Green and Christina Perri are a few of the artists owned by the Warner Music Group record label. The Warner Music Group record label also owns smaller companies within the music industry such as; Atlantic and Warner Bros Records. Atlantic manages artists within the music industry like Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars and Wiz Khalifa. Warner Bros Records manages artists including Biffy Clyro, Jason Derulo and The Veronicas. Warner Music Group is owned by Time Warner, the worlds largest media conglomerate which has links with film and entertainment, publishing and television.

Independents
An independent record label is a music label that operates one or a few music labels. It operates without funding of the organisations of the major record labels. A number of artists and bands begin their music career being signed to an independent record label. Independent labels can be just as successful as major record labels, they just operate from a smaller company base.

There are a number of independent record labels in the UK which include; Rough Trade records who managed artists such as The Libertines, Arcade Fire and The Strokes. Rough Trade records was formed in 1978 with artists mainly of genres including; punk and indie pop. This record label therefore closely relates to our chosen song as it is of the indie genre.

Another independent record label is Warp Records which was founded in Sheffield in 1989. The record label is known for discovering some of the most enduring artists in electronic music. Aphex Twin, Maximo Park and Flying Lotus are just a few of the artists managed by the Warp Records label.

I think its a positive aspect that 4 companies dominate the music industry as they have the most knowledge within the industry. Therefore they will give artists a more likely chance of success within the music industry. In addition to this they will be able to provide the audience with the music they anticipate to listen to. However it will be hard for artists signed to independent record labels to break through into the music industry as there is such competition from the 4 dominating companies. This may prove to be unfair to artists as they may have to settle for signing to an independent record label as the major record label has such high standards of artists that they want to sign. They also manage artists more likely to appeal to a gap in the market at that particular time. This will mean that if the major record label successfully fills the gap with one of their artists and independent record label artist may struggle to gain public interest into their music.

By having 4 main companies that dominate the music industry it could have a profoundly positive affect on the industry. This is because the 4 main companies will manage artists of an extremely high standard and will also be able to implore them high up in the music industry with ease through exposure to record label fans. By having 4 main companies within the music industry it may also entice independent record labels to increase their artists musical standards which would therefore provide more competition within the industry. This could therefore lead to a rise in success of artists within independent record labels.

I believe that major record labels are without a doubt more successful than independent record labels. This is because they have access to the best artists around as they have extreme power within the industry. This would therefore attract upcoming artists to side with signing to a major record label rather than an independent record label. Another reason that an artist would rather sign to a major record label is because they manage artists that are extremely popular in the music industry, and in turn they would believe that by signing to a major record label their chances of success will increase. Therefore it leaves independent labels little room in the music industry to produce high quality and successful artists that the audience will want to listen to.

Independent record labels are able to offer the music industry real artists who are not moulded to fit a specific persona that the public are desperate to have. This means that the music industry s likely to have more down to earth and relatable artists that are likely to highly appeal to the public. Independent record labels are more likely to sign underdeveloped and unusual artists, providing the public with a variation from the artists they would usually find themselves listening to. In addition to this independent record labels will have more time on their hands to assist their artists with their music which could in turn increase the quality of the songs they produce. This would therefore entice more people to listen to their artists music and as a result they will be more satisfied with what they are listening to.

Filming Schedule

Filming Schedule

Creating a filming schedule before the production of our music video was vital. This is because we wanted to ensure that the filming process ran smoothly with limited disruptions. Therefore we created a filming schedule that contained detailed information about different aspects of each day we planned to film. By doing this, as a group we kept organised and were aware of exactly what we had to film on each day. In addition to this by creating a film schedule it allowed us to minimise disruption times and focus our full attention of producing high quality shots that we form together to create the conventional music video that we anticipated.

As a group we followed the film schedule as much as we possibly could so that the filming process of our music video would be executed with ease. However during the filming process on a number of occasions we faced a number of obstacles that meant we were unable to film, such as the weather. This therefore put our filming plans behind schedule, but due to our detailed filming schedule we produced we were able to catch up with our filming anticipations with ease. This meant that the quality of our footage, and overall our music video would not be affected.

Magazine Advert Analysis

Magazine Advert Analysis

The purpose of a magazine advert is to promote the artist and their music to the audience. It highlights to the audience the genre of music that the artist is of, and therefore means they can make a decision early on whether they may be interested in this particular artist. A magazine advert gives the audience vital information regarding the artist, their music and any performances they may be selling tickets for. In addition to this a magazine advert allows the audience to understand connotations and hidden meanings about the artist and also their music, which will assist them with making a decision of whether to visit one of their performances or listen to their music.

Nina Nesbitt
The first advert I have analysed is that of Nina Nesbitt, the artist of the song my group is making a music video to.

This magazine advert presents Nina as a down to earth, quirky teenager. This is due to the clothing she is seen wearing. The denim shorts and jumper present a somewhat scruffy appearance for Nina but it is typical attire for a teenage girl. Further to this she is wearing red lipstick which is very common among older teenagers/young adults as they begin to experiment with wearing more make-up as they go through the maturing stages of their lives. Nina is wearing her hair down and it is also somewhat scruffy which links in with the clothing she is wearing. It also connotes the idea that she is not highly concerned about the perfection of her appearance which is highly common with teenage girls. In the advert she is giving eye contact to the audience which also presents her as approachable and relatable for her fans. It allows them to begin to build a relationship with her purely based on the image of her that they are presented with. The locations of her tour are in relatively small venues which provides the audience with the information that she is upcoming within the music industry, as she is still forming a stable fan base.

The main colour used in the music video is blue. The colour blue connotes the idea of peacefulness and calmness which further presents Nina as a down to earth individual. It provides the audience with the information that she may not be extremely well known within the music industry as she has not yet been affected by fame. It also illustrates Nina as laid back and relaxed which could be due to her slowly entering the music industry, and therefore she currently has some kind of control over her life. The colour blue does not overly stand out as attracting the audiences attention. It is therefore conventional to the indie genre as it highlights the idea that Nina is not extremely famous and well known within the music industry. The two other colours that are evident on the advert are the green in Ninas' jumper and the cream background she is standing in front. The colour green is also a somewhat calming colour and therefore further illustrates Nina as down to earth and laid back. The cream colour is very simple and plain which is conventional to the indie genre. It focuses the audiences attention on Nina which allows them to concentrate on her representation as an artist.

The Nina Nesbitt advert has a very structured appearance which makes it easy for the audience to understand the advert. Nina is positioned to the left of the advert, but is the only image included, which therefore allows her to become the main focus of the advert. The image of Nina takes up a substantial amount of the advert, but however is not overpowering. This is due to the fact that Nina is still an upcoming artist within the music industry and therefore is still making herself known to the public. The dates and times of her tour are positioned to the right of Nina and are structurally presented. This means the audience can become aware of when and where she is performing with ease.

The only image included in the advert is of Nina Nesbitt herself. This is to keep the audiences attention primarily focused on her. It could also be representative of how her music is simple and to the point, which is conventional of the indie genre. Employing only the image of Nina allows the audience to become more familiar with her as an artist as she is upcoming and new within the music industry. This may allow Nina to attain additional interest from the public which will result in her fan base increasing.

The font that is the main focus of the advert is that of her name. This is to straight away grab the audiences attention as to who the artist is. The font is italic and the sizes of the lettering varies and it therefore looks somewhat child like. This highlights the idea that Nina is still a teenager as she is 19 years old, and therefore still carries child like attributes. It may also portray how she has a fun and quirky personality and is therefore highly relatable for older teenagers/young adults.

On the magazine advert the only writing that is seen is that of her name and of her tour dates and times. Therefore the main style of language included is informative. The language allows the audience to learn who the artist is and also where and when she is performing on her tour. The advert also provides the audience with the information of how to purchase the tickets to her tour and the company's that are presenting her tour. This allows the audience to be substantially informed by the advert surrounding Nina and her tour.

The main aspect of the advert that promotes that Nina is of the indie genre is the brick wall background. The brick background is a conventional setting for an indie genre music video as it evokes an edgy feel surrounding the artist. It is also a cheap location and is therefore widely used among indie artists who are upcoming and not yet well known within the music industry. In addition the appearance of Nina in the advert further informs the audience of the indie genre of music that Nina performs. This is due to the somewhat 'scruffy' appearance being conventional and popular with artists in the indie genre.

The magazine advert promotes Nina as an artist as it allows the audience to become familiar with who she is. The image of Nina is the main focus of the advert and therefore means the audience become aware and known of who she is. The appearance of Nina is significant in promoting her as an artist. It allows the audience to gain an insight into the type of artist she may be and also further informs them of the genre of music it is that she sings. The tour dates/locations also promote Nina. They inform the audience that Nina is still upcoming within the music industry as she is only playing relatively small venues. This may encourage potential fans to listen to her music and in turn support her as an artist.

The advert attracts an audience as the appearance of Nina resembles that of everyday teenagers. It therefore provides potential fans with a figure to relate to. The main colour of the advert, blue, attracts the audience as it is eye catching and makes the advert easy to read and understand for the audience. This would therefore be highly appealing to Ninas' target audience of older teenagers/young adults.

Florence and the Machine
The second advert I am analysing is Florence and the Machine who is of the indie genre and will give me a greater insight into the components of indie genre magazine adverts.

The magazine advert provides the audience with an insight in to the artist Florence and the Machine. Florence does not provide the audience with eye contact and therefore does not allow a connection to be formed for the audience. The lack of eye contact may suggest to the audience that Florence is a somewhat reserved person. However in contrast to this, Florences' lungs are seen on the outside of her body, which may be significant of her evoking her feelings to her fans through her music, as this may be her only escape. The image that is shown on the advert is that of her album cover. This allows the audience to determine that the music she will be singing during her performance may be that from her album, therefore promoting her new music. Florences' overall appearance illustrates that of elegance, this is due to the positioning of her body and also her surroundings. Her surroundings involve that of nature and therefore presents Florence as a down to earth, caring individual. It allows the audience to interpret that she is not overcome by fame and therefore may have a connection with nature through her music. It also presents Florence as a natural individual and in turn is true to herself through her music.

The main colour seen on the magazine is black. The black background adds an element of darkness and mystery to the advert. This could be suggestive of the meaning behind the songs on her album and also the type of artist she is becoming. The colour black is also representative of authority and power and may therefore connote the idea that Florence seeks to gain power within the music industry. The image of Florence seen on the advert provides the visuals of her lungs being on the outside of her body. This could be a connotation for the fact the music she sings on her 'lungs' album may truly reflect the feelings she holds inside, and has therefore let them out into the world. The red colour of the lungs may be extremely significant to the advert and the representation of Florence as an artist. The colour red is the most emotionally intense colour and could be a connotation of the idea of love. Further providing the audience with an insight into the meanings of her songs, and the fact that she may be singing about her true feelings.

The advert presents Florence as the main focus as the image of her takes up over half of the advert. This is so that the first thing that the audience notice is the image which they can link to that of her 'Lungs' album. Surrounding the image is a black border which further keeps the focus on Florence as it is dark and somewhat bland. However the black background could be significant of the type of music on her Lungs album. In addition to this the text is placed to the top and bottom of the image. Above the image is the name of the band and support act as this is the most important piece of textual information on the advert. This information will determine whether the audience will continue to read the rest of the advert, therefore its place is extremely vital on the advert. Below the image is the important information regarding her performance which will appeal to her fans who decide to read the whole advert.

The image on the advert is that of Florence and the Machines' Lungs album cover. This informs the audience that the songs she will be singing at her performance will be from that album. This also may inform the audience that the performance she is doing is to promote her album to her fans and also any potential future fans. The image included on the advert also provides the audience with an array of connotations which may relate to the songs that are on her album. This means that they can understand the deeper meaning behind her songs and in turn enjoy her music at a higher level. In addition to this the image used on the advert means the audience become aware of the idea that she is a reserved individual and only presents her feelings through her music.

The font used for the band name has a cursive appearance and therefore the letters flow into each other. This links in with the idea that Florence has a somewhat elegant appearance. The band name is the most eye catching form of typography as it is significant to the artist and enticing the audience to listen to her music or to go see her show. The other text seen on the advert is in bold letters which differentiates them from the band name. The use of this means the band name is the main textual focus, but allows the audience to understand and read the other information with ease. In addition to this the informative text is also eye catching for the audience but does not deter their attention from the bands name. The bands support acts name is somewhat eye catching besides Florence and the Machines name, this allows the audience to familiarise themselves with the support act which may assist with enticing them to go and watch the performance.

The main style of language included on the advert is informative. This is due to the language being that of information regarding her performance. The writing provides the audience with the information of where the show is, how to purchase the tickets to the show and the costs. This gives the audience the relevant information straight away which is likely to entice them to purchase tickets to the show early on. The lack of any other form of language is due to the main focus being kept on the image central to the advert.

The advert promotes the music genre of Florence and the Machine mainly through the image included and the colours of the advert. The image, which is that of her 'Lungs' album cover will appeal to the fans of the band who have listened to the album. This is because they will be familiar with her music and will therefore be notified of its genre immediately. The main colours on the advert are dark, including the black and red. This could evoke the idea that the band is of an indie genre as these colours are highly generic to the genre.

Florence and the Machine is promoted through the advert as the audience receive an insight into the band and their music. The image of the advert is highly significant in allowing the audience to understand more surrounding Florence herself, which is due to the fact she is not seen giving eye contact to the audience. This adds an element of secrecy to her music which is further determined by the background she is seen standing in front. It evokes that her music may somewhat deter the indie genre in some way, and in addition may contain vital information regarding her true feelings behind the music.

The advert attracts the target audience mainly due to the image being the main focus of the advert. It provides the audience with something to relate to and to determine who the artist is. In addition to this the contrast between the image and the black border may entice an audience as it allows the image to stand out and become more eye catching. The connotations of the advert may also be extremely appealing to the target audience as they understand that there may be hidden meaning behind her music.

The research of the two magazine adverts I have conducted will assist with the planning and creating of my own advert as they are both of the indie genre. Therefore from analysing the two adverts I have gained a deeper insight into certain components and conventions that they have followed to create a successfully conventional magazine advert. In turn the research has given me various ideas that I can incorporate into my magazine advert such as; the brick background on Nina Nesbitts advert, and the extreme connotations evident on Florence and the Machines advert. Including a brick background on my magazine advert will result in it being more visually conventional and providing the magazine advert with a somewhat edgy appearance. By employing a number of these other elements it will mean that my advert will be more conventional to the indie genre and will also be more appealing to my target audience.
