Magazine Advert Reflection

Magazine Advert Reflection

Conducting research into indie magazine adverts gave me an insight into the elements incorporated to create a conventionally appealing magazine advert. It allowed me to understand the importance of combining specific components together to create a visually appealing magazine advert that is also conventional to its genre. I was able to depict ideas from the Nina Nesbitt and Florence and the Machine adverts of the indie genre I analysed which assisted me when creating my own magazine advert design. Ideas I took from analysing these magazine adverts included; a brick wall background and the cursive style typography. However a number of elements I decided to include in my magazine advert design somewhat subverted the conventions of the indie genre, and therefore will hopefully appeal to a wider audience.

The ideas and inspirations behind my paper design of the magazine advert have come from the research I have conducted. I chose to incorporate a brick wall background behind the image of the artist as it is conventional to the indie genre as seen on Nina Nesbitts magazine advert. However the background also evokes the idea of the artist being somewhat urban which subverts the conventional representations of an indie artist who is usually linked to rural locations. In front of the brick wall I decided to include a close up of the artist. This is to allow the audience to become familiar with her and they can begin to build a relationship with her as an artist. Also within the image the artist is seen wearing a nosering which provides the audience with a visual link to the noserings and shoestrings song that our music video is produced to. The daisy logo I designed for my magazine advert somewhat subverts the conventions of the indie genre. This is because the logo is visually girly and quirky. I incorporated images of daisys within the logo to link in with the artists name, which may be visually appealing for the audience. On the magazine advert I designed I included vague information that I believed would be be appropriate to entice the audience to purchase the artists album. I boldly incorporated the release date of the album so that it would begin to build a hype around the album and would get the public thinking and talking about the album. This could lead to more people buying the album. Also I included a number of songs that will be on the album, this would entice the public who are already fans of these songs to purchase the album. In addition to this the song titles provide the audience with an idea of what the songs may be about which may assist in enticing them to buy the album. The main colours I incorporated onto the magazine advert was yellow and pink. These colours subvert the conventions of the indie genre as they are girly and would therefore appeal to a wider range of audiences who may not necessarily be fans of indie music.

By forming ideas and inspirations surrounding the magazine advert of our artist it will assist me with creating it on photoshop as I have a clear idea of what I want the outcome to be. When creating my magazine advert I will be able to use my paper copy as guidance so that when using photoshop I will be able to produce an accurate copy of what I designed. By having a paper copy of my design it will inform me of what tools I will need to use in photoshop to create the outcome I anticipate. This would therefore mean I would not have to spend unnecessary time on photoshop deciding upon what tools to use and what to create with them. In addition to this by having a paper copy of my design it is likely to improve the quality of the magazine advert I produce as I am fully aware of what I anticipate it to visually be like.

I created my first magazine advert on photoshop, which was the first time I had used the photo editing programme. It proved a success as I took my time to come to terms with every different tool and what they did. My first magazine advert I have created is somewhat conventional to the indie genre due to the components I have combined together. My magazine advert contains a brick wall background which is highly conventional to the indie genre as it provides an edgy and rural appearance. The brick wall background is also simplistic which is further conventional to the indie genre as artists of this genre include simple components into their music work. Most of my text is black and therefore stands out to the audience and is conventional to the indie genre as it is a versatile colour. This therefore allows the magazine advert to appeal to males and females. The image of my artist is central and she is seen wearing a denim t-shirt and a nosering. This image is therefore highly conventional to the indie genre as it includes elements that are extremely popular with fans of indie music and indie artists. This therefore allows the magazine advert to highly appeal to indie genre music fans.

I believe that my target audience will easily be able to build a relationship with my artist through the magazine advert I have produced. This is due to the image of my artist being centrally positioned which allows it to be the main focus of the magazine advert. In addition to this my artist is facing forward and giving the audience eye contact with therefore allows the target audience to build a relationship with the artist as the eye contact provides them with an insight into her personality.

I decided to incorporate a brick wall background into my magazine advert as this is highly conventional to the indie genre. This therefore allows the audience to understand the genre of the artist from their first glance at the magazine advert. It is also extremely eye catching and adds an edgy and rural element to the magazine advert, further presenting the indie genre. I decided to include an image of my artist centrally located on the magazine advert and with her providing eye contact with the audience to allow them to build a relationship with the artist and learn more about her as a performer. The eye contact of my artist further catches the audiences attention as the second they see the magazine advert they will feel connected with the artist. I decided to make the text of my artists name in a pattern that incorporated a flower design. This is so that the text would directly relate to my artists name and would therefore be eye catching and appeal to the target audience. The rest of the text I have incorporated into my magazine advert is in the colour black. This is so that is stands out for the audience and would inform them of the information of the magazine advert in the first glance. The choices I made regarding my magazine advert are conventional to the indie genre. This is because the magazine advert is appealing yet simplistic which is highly conventional of the indie genre.

From my first magazine advert I would change the layout of the advert so that it would be more visually appealing to the target audience. I would keep the brick wall background as it is highly conventional to the indie genre and would therefore allow the magazine advert to appeal to the target audience. In addition to this I would change the style of the font I have incorporated so that it would appeal and be more eye catching for the target audience which may enhance the likelihood of the magazine advert appealing to the target audience.

After my first magazine advert I created another one that was an improved version of the first. The first magazine advert I created assisted me with doing this as used is as a base to improve upon. I kept the brick background but stretched it to cover the whole area of my magazine advert. I decided to incorporate a different image of my artist as I believed it would appeal to my target audience more. The image has my artist holding an acoustic guitar which further portrays the indie genre, and she is still providing the audience with eye contact which allows them to build a relationship with her. I altered the font of the text on my magazine advert as I believed it would be more eye catching for the audience and in turn make the magazine advert more visually appealing. I also decided to include more text onto the magazine advert to provide the audience with more information which may entice them to look into the magazine advert more and therefore purchase my artists album.

  1. This post demonstrates a proficient understanding of the choices and decisions that you made to your magazine advert. You have analysed your designs well, by commenting on the choices that you made to the colours and the images and also the inspirations that you gained, but further detail is needed throughout.

This can be achieved, by focusing on the target audience, conventions and indie codes and conventions.

Also how will you share this design with your group and consider a group design?
